Over the past month, SMARTIN strengthened its visibility within the European mobility community through its participation in two major events: the ITS European Congress 2026 in Istanbul and Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2026 in Budapest. These events provided valuable opportunities to showcase the project’s vision, exchange knowledge with stakeholders, and engage with experts shaping the future of transport infrastructure across Europe.
ITS European Congress 2026
Held in Istanbul from 27 to 29 April 2026, the 17th ITS European Congress, organised by ERTICO, brought together mobility stakeholders from across Europe and beyond to explore the latest innovations in “integrated, safe and seamless mobility”.
SMARTIN was showcased at the ERTICO booth, where visitors had the opportunity to discover the project’s objectives, pilot activities and technological approach. A key highlight was the official release of the SMARTIN introductory video, presented publicly for the first time during the event. The video introduces SMARTIN’s vision for smarter, safer and more resilient transport infrastructure, highlighting how AI, Big Data, IoT and 5G connectivity are being leveraged to support multimodal, accessible and sustainable mobility systems across the four pilot sites.
SMARTIN also contributed to two Special Interest Sessions exploring the role of digitalisation and data-driven innovation in mobility management and infrastructure safety.
In SIS 34 – Closing the safety loop for active mobility: Virtuous and vicious cycles in urban cycling networks, partners discussed how AI-driven predictive analytics and decision-support tools can support safer cycling infrastructure and encourage active mobility. The session highlighted the role of the SMARTIN project in developing intelligent systems and methodologies to help cities become more bike-friendly, with contributions from ERTICO, FACTUAL and Barcelona City Council.
SMARTIN also co-organised SIS 8 – From fragmentation to integration: Digital solutions for multimodal mobility management together with the sister projects MOVEO and MITHOS. The discussion focused on how advanced digitalisation, real-time data exchange and AI-driven analytics can support integrated multimodal mobility systems, optimise infrastructure use and improve accessibility and coordination across transport networks.
Transport Research Arena 2026
SMARTIN was also present at TRA 2026, held in Budapest from 18 to 21 May 2026. Organised by the European Commission, TRA brought together researchers, industry representatives, policymakers and civil society to exchange ideas and showcase innovations shaping the future of transport research.
During the event, SMARTIN was represented at the ERTICO booth, where had the opportunity to discover the project’s objectives and progress and engage directly with the project coordinator, Anaïs Baudrier, to learn more about SMARTIN’s vision for smarter, safer and more resilient transport infrastructure.
Participation in both events reinforced SMARTIN’s commitment to collaboration, stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange, while highlighting the project’s contribution to the future of digitalised, user-centric and sustainable transport infrastructure in Europe.
