In the effort to release Europe’s transport infrastructure pressure and make roads, bridges, rail corridors and waterways safer, cleaner and more inclusive, a consolidated online repository of digital tools could help deliver this transformation in a coordinated, informed way. This is where SMARTIN’s new Knowledge Base Navigator (KBN) comes in.
The KBN, developed as part of Deliverable 2.1, is a practical, online “navigator” that brings together the most relevant tools, practices and digital solutions for modern transport infrastructure in one place.
Its goal is simple: make it easier for practitioners to find, understand and reuse the expertise that already exists across Europe. Instead of starting from scratch every time a city wants to monitor infrastructure health, redesign a corridor or manage multimodal services, the KBN offers:
- curated descriptions of digital tools and methodologies
- examples of how they are used in real projects
- references to standards, guidelines and proven practices
In short, it is a capacity-building hub designed to support infrastructure authorities, operators and planners as they step into data-driven management.
Three core themes
To keep the content focused and practical, the KBN is organised around three critical subjects:
- Infrastructure Health: Monitoring, Control & Prediction
Tools and approaches for understanding the condition of assets, anticipating failures and planning maintenance more intelligently. - Traffic & Mobility Management
Solutions that help cities and regions manage flows in real time, reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users. - Multimodal Travel & Dynamic Use of Space
Services that support seamless travel across modes and smarter use of limited urban space, from public transport and micromobility to freight.
Across these themes, the navigator highlights how infrastructure monitoring data, digital connectivity, operations and maintenance, and governance mechanisms can work together to support better decisions, rather than sitting in separate silos.
Built on collective expertise
SMARTIN brings together partners from multiple countries and disciplines, including research organisations, cities, transport authorities and industry. The KBN taps into this collective know-how: each entry reflects real experience with deploying digital tools in complex operational environments.
This collaborative approach makes the KBN more than a static catalogue. It is intended as a living resource, evolving as pilots progress and as new insights emerge from SMARTIN and other initiatives.
