In Latvia, according to legislation, public transport is provided by the state and state cities municipalities. The state is responsible for the regional route network, both for buses and trains. Currently, as much as possible, train schedules are synchronized with bus schedules to allow passengers to transfer between them. However, this process still involves a lot of manual work, which does not always identify all the connections and can lead to overcrowded or, conversely, unprofitable bus services.
The pilot project will demonstrate a new transport optimization tool that uses historical data (for both buses and trains) to improve the visual transparency of the collaboration between bus and rail services. The tool will visualize the networks on a map and highlight areas that require improvements, helping route planners make decisions, such as aligning schedules, adjusting routes to match demand, or creating stronger multimodal connections between buses and trains. The aim is to make public transport more efficient, reduce costs, and lower fuel consumption.
